About the Juniors

The Deer Park Junior Fire Department includes young men and women between the ages of 12 and 18 years old. We are taught what the DPFD firefighters are taught, however, they can not perform certain tasks due to safety concerns. We do though learn first hand what happens during a fire. We have 3 advisors that Volunteer their time one day a week to teach us the operations that they have learned over the years they have been a member. The Juniors participate in activities such as the Annual Open House, Parades, Fund Raisers (as well as the Department Fund Raisers), Department functions, and much more. After the age of 18 our members will hopefully become a member at the Deer Park Fire Department.

Junior History

In July 1935, the fire men considered forming a Juvenile Fire Company, open to boys fourteen to twenty-one years old. It was felt that this type of unit could be an asset during the brush fire season. They sought information on the subject from FASNY(The Firemen's Association of the State of New York), who's Law Committee looked with disfavor on the proposition, refering to the question thats may arise as to protection under the compensation provisions of the State Law. The entirre matter was dropped.

Thirty years later, the suggestion to form a junior arm of the fire service came to fulfillment with the 971 Charter presentation of Explorer Post 507, Boy Scouts of America, to the sponsoring The Deer Park Fire Department. The Juniors can be thought of as the "farm team" of the department, considering how many boys upon coming of age continue on as regular firemen and line officers. The future firefighters later severed their connection with the Scout movement and became the Deer Park Junior Fire Department
